SUMMARY

In the near future, government surveillance is ubiquitous and transplant organs are grown from human stem cells inside farm animals. When philanthropist Elie Ray is denied a "farmed" heart by industry giant, StemTech Pharmaceuticals, his wife Vikki, a New York Times journalist, investigates.  She discovers a whistleblower offering  incriminating evidence, but he is murdered leaving Vikki with the files he offered locked by an unbreakable encryption code.

Vikki seeks the help of her former lover, homicide cop Donnie Greene, who has clandestine access to various government surveillance tools.  Donnie warns her that she is fighting powerful enemies and should focus on saving Elie, but he too becomes a StemTech surveillance target and is dragged into the investigation.

StemTech's official explanation for Elie's denial of a farmed heart is his rare auto-immune disorder that will result in rejection of any "farmed" organ.  This diagnosis prompts Elie's doctor to place him on the human donor list, and a heart quickly becomes available via a car accident in nearby Philadelphia.

Elie is prepped for surgery, but he refuses the heart when Donnie discovers that the donor heart came from a man murdered specifically because his organs are highly compatible.  When Ellie dies, Vikki and Donnie continue their investigation and discover a global conspiracy in the farmed organ industry.

A “blend of sci-fi and mystery, calling to mind classics like ‘Blade Runner.’  It mixes a noir sensibility with a fully realized futuristic world…vividly portrayed.  The mystery itself is equally engaging, and the plot does a great job of building suspense and keeping us uncertain about the solution.”
